The 1911 Athletic team struck a discouraging note for Mack in the first fortnight of the race. After Bender lost the opener, 2 to 1, to Big Jim Vaughn, known as “Hippo” Vaughn, of the Yanks, the Athletics dropped six games of their first eight, and after two weeks of play they were in the cellar. They started to do better after that, but Detroit, the former chronic pennant winner, threatened to make a strong comeback and won 21 of its first 23 games. That early reservoir of victories propped Hughie Jennings in first place until August 4, with the exception of July 4, when Connie dislodged him for a day. Cobb was a veritable ball of fire that season, hitting .420, scoring 147 runs and stealing 83 bases.

But Mack’s training philosophy, expressed on the Savannah trip, worked itself out in practice during the season. The Tigers were on edge for the opening of the season, but they staled in August, when the White Elephants trumpeted past them and soon left the Tigers far behind. The happy A’s came down the home stretch all by themselves, winning by 13½ games.
